Owner-Operators: How You Pay For Your Fuel Can Reduce Your Costs

As a truck owner-operator, one thing that you probably spend a whole lot of money on is your diesel fuel. Depending on how many miles you drive each day, you might spend thousands of dollars each month on fuel for your rig. You probably already know about some of the ways that you can preserve fuel, such as by ensuring that your truck is in good condition and by maintaining a reasonable speed. However, you should also know that the way that you pay for your fuel can also reduce your costs. These are a couple of changes that you can make that can allow you to save money on your fuel. Over time, these savings can really add up.

Use a Business Credit Card That Offers Rewards

If you currently use your debit card or cash to pay for fuel, you may want to consider switching to using a business credit card instead. For one thing, some credit cards actually offer rewards, such as by giving you a certain percentage of what you spend back in cash. Even though the percentages can be small, the cash back rewards can really add up, particularly when you consider that you are paying for fuel that you would purchase anyway. Plus, if you are putting all of your diesel fuel purchases on one credit card, it will be a lot easier to keep up with your expenses than if you paid with cash or a combination of cash and credit cards. This can make month-to-month bookkeeping a whole lot easier and can also help you out when you are figuring up deductions at tax time.

Join Fuel Station Loyalty Programs

If you are a long-haul driver, you probably stop at a lot of different fuel station chains. This means that you might have never been interested in joining the loyalty programs that these different stations offer. However, it typically only takes a few minutes to sign up for a loyalty card, and these cards can help you win free rewards -- such as free snacks or prepared items or a certain amount off of each gallon of fuel that you purchase -- and offer other perks. Consider asking for a keychain-sized card when you sign up at each station, then keep them all on a separate key ring. Then, you can whip out your loyalty card on repeat visits to various fuel stations.
